Stop 1

Agrigento

Agrigento: known worldwide for its Valley of the Temples, a major testimony of Greek Sicily and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Among the most important sites is The Valley of the Temples, the unmissable attraction. This archaeological site lies south of the city of Agrigento. The park contains 8 temples; the two most famous are the Temple of Concordia and the Temple of Hera, also known as the Temple of Juno. They are the best preserved in the whole valley and give a real sense of the original scale of the site.

In the middle of the valley, on a hill, stands the Regional Archaeological Museum of Agrigento, with a collection of artefacts found in the area: Greek and Roman sarcophagi and ancient vases. From the Valley of the Temples you can head to the historic centre of Agrigento, with its churches and cobblestone streets. The walk starts from Via Atenea, the main street of the old town.

West of Agrigento, in Realmonte, is the Scala dei Turchi, the second most visited place around town. It is a white limestone cliff shaped like a staircase, sculpted by wind and sea. The contrast between the white cliff and the turquoise water is striking.

Marsala

Marsala is a town on the western coast of Sicily, known for the fortified wine that bears its name and for its layered history. Its streets tell the stories of ancient civilisations, while the coastal landscape offers wide views over the Stagnone lagoon and the salt pans.

The town has been influenced by many cultures over the centuries, visible in its architecture, from Phoenician ruins to Roman and medieval landmarks. Marsala is also known for its connection to Giuseppe Garibaldi, who landed here in 1860 to start the campaign of the Thousand.

Its food and wine heritage is reflected in Marsala wine, recognised worldwide, and in the local cuisine, from fish recipes to traditional Sicilian dishes. The town offers a balance between historic heritage and contemporary culture.
