Tour Itinerary

04 - Tour Messina, Taormina, savoca, forza d'agro
Stop 1

Messina

The Cathedral of Messina has always been the symbol of the city, a constant reference point for its people, rebuilt every time after the various destructions over the centuries.

On the left of the facade stands the monumental Bell Tower, over 60 metres high, with the largest astronomical and astrological clock in the world. At twelve strikes at noon, the clock sets in motion all the mechanical figures to background music.

Another religious building worth visiting is the Catalans Church, an example of late Byzantine architecture. The progressive rising of the city after earthquakes has left the church about three metres below today's street level.

The last stop is the Christ the King Sanctuary, with views over the Strait of Messina and the Calabrian coast.

Stop 2

Taormina

Taormina is a hill town close to Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe.

The town is known for the Greek-Roman Theatre, still used today for live performances. Just below the theatre, the cliffs drop down to the sea forming small bays.

A narrow strip of sand connects Taormina to the small Isola Bella, a protected nature reserve.

The town mixes history and landscape in a way that has attracted poets, writers and international celebrities for over a century.

Stop 3

Forza D'Agrò

Forza d'Agro is a hill village. This small town became known worldwide because Francis Ford Coppola used it as a filming location for The Godfather, with several scenes shot in its streets and monuments.

The village sits close to the most popular seaside destinations in Sicily, and Forza d'Agro is one of the most visited spots in eastern Sicily for travellers thanks to the easy access, the natural landscape and the historic and cultural points of interest.

Stop 4

Savoca

Savoca is a small village that can be visited entirely on foot.
The route around the main sights is quite straightforward. Once past the Old City Gate, you follow the only street that crosses the village, Via San Michele, which then becomes Via Chiesa Madre.

You reach the Chiesa Madre and the Chiesa del Calvario, then return to the starting point.

Savoca is a hilltop town with many attractions, listed among "The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy". Beyond its setting, what made Savoca known worldwide is The Godfather: several scenes were shot here, including the famous one at Bar Vitelli where Michael Corleone goes in for a drink.

The bar is still full of objects and photographs from the Coppola film.
