Tour Itinerary

Stop 1

Syracuse

Syracuse sits on the eastern coast of Sicily, partly on the mainland and partly on the island of Ortigia.

Ortigia is the heart of the historic city. From here you reach Fonte Aretusa, a freshwater spring that forms a small lake where the only spontaneous papyrus plants in Europe grow.

In the historic centre of Ortigia you find churches, squares and Baroque palaces. A must-stop is the Cathedral of Syracuse, built where the ancient Greek temple of Athena once stood, one of the best examples of Sicilian Baroque.

On Piazza Duomo, a treasure of elegant palaces and solemn churches, you visit the Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia, dedicated to the patron saint of Syracuse and home to Caravaggio's painting "The Burial of St Lucy".

Crossing the bridge you reach the Archaeological Park of Neapolis. Here you visit the Greek Theatre and the Latomia del Paradiso with the Ear of Dionysius, a huge artificial cave with extraordinary acoustics. The Altar of Hieron and the Roman Amphitheatre are also part of the park.

Stop 2

Noto

Noto is called the Capital of Baroque and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2002.

The main street is Corso Vittorio Emanuele III, walked on foot to discover, step by step, squares, monasteries, churches and noble palaces. Do not stop at the facade: many of them hold interiors and terraces with wide views over the town.
